TEXT: Matthew 5:27-30
I hope by now you realize just how serious sin is. It is so serious that Jesus says it is better for one to pluck out his eye which is used to lust or cut off his hand which is used to carry out the desires of the flesh in order to avoid sin. If one finds the temptation to sin that hard to resist, then maiming one's self is preferable to the punishment of sin which is hell. John Walvoord and Charles Dyer write in their commentary, "Much has been written about Jesus' charge to remove the eye or hand that may cause a person to commit sin. There is no scriptural support that Jesus meant that lust could be conquered by physical maiming, but rather that the severity of the sin required severe self-judgment. If the choice were to lose a body part or to be sentenced to eternal damnation in Gehenna, obviously it would be better to be maimed."
